Ep. 153 Radically Rooted in Hard Times: Skill In Action with Michelle C. Johnson

Today we’re speaking with Michelle C. Johnson, author, yoga teacher, healer, social worker, dismantling racism trainer, activist, and grief-worker, whose book Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World has been helping me answer the question: How we can truly support ourselves to be able to step up in the most expansive and aligned way in our roles within the collective dismantling process? Michelle’s book is a gift for these times -  incredibly insightful & affirming, particularly right now, as more folx awaken to the ways we can dismantle and decondition racist + oppressive programs & begin healing the injustices of the imposed systems as individuals and as community uplifting BIPOC voices.

In this interview, Michelle shares what Skill in Action means to her, and the power of story, such as the Bhagavad Gita as an inspiration for her work and philosophy.

We talk about how simple can be transformational, and the simple yet powerful practices Michelle offers in her book, as well as samskaras & spirituality - Michelle invites us to slow down enough to respond to our personal patterns thru mindfulness and spiritual connection.

We get into the problematic industry of “wellness” and how it was not created for ALL bodies to be included as Michelle shares her thoughts on yoga + injustice, our collective awakening, and reflections upon death and hardship.

We touch on white supremacy and Capitalism within the yoga and wellness industries, and why it’s critical to honor in the wake of overwhelm and the Wave of change.

Stay tuned to the end to hear Venessa’s “Where I’m From” poem inspired by a practice in Michelle’s book Skill In Action.

Ep. 151 {SOLO} New Moon in Leo :: The Transformative Fire in our Hearts & Bellies

Happy New Moon! In this solo/moon musing episode, I get fired up and emotional as I share my perspective on this new moon in Leo, the state of the world, and our role in it. I share the major lessons I learned from my recent (and humbling) canker sore outbreak, the energetic influences of this new moon, the heart-gut connection and the power of fire (our agni) to transmute the pain and muck into medicine.

This powerful and fiery new moon in Leo inspires us to burn perennially, without burning up or burning out, and asks us to step into leadership within our lives through compassion, creativity, and passion.

Collectively and individually, we are being called to look at what’s been lurking in our dark spaces so we can experience them from a different vantage point and transmute it with clarity, discernment, and love. I discuss eradication versus regeneration, the concept of “pruning and sprouting”, and ways we can start nourishing the inner ecology of our heart & gut, including herbal allies and stone medicine.

You have a powerful role to play in this new world. In order to do so, you MUST tend to your body, your heart, your energy, and your GUT!

Ep. 150 Unwinding Gut Wellness Through Breath, Touch, & Awareness with Allison Post

We’re speaking with Allison Post, Integrative Medicine Health Coach and Somatic Educator. Her latest book, co-authored with her husband, is The Gut Wellness Guide: The Power of Breath, Touch, and Awareness to Reduce Stress, Aid Digestion, and Reclaim Whole-Body Health.

In this conversation, Allison shares some of the challenging traumas and health crises that led her to a healing path, the world of holistic healing, breathwork, somatic touch and the gut. Allison talks about her concept of “unwinding” and why she believes that going straight into those harder deeper gut therapies right away can actually be ineffective and even detrimental.

Allison explains why it's critical that we meet our healing from a different paradigm and way of being that invites slow and gentle, she walks us through this first steps of the “unwinding” process that anyone with gut issues can take, including wonderful prompts to cultivate awareness of our gut and body to unveil root issues and interconnections within the dis-ease.

We touch on the significance of belly breathing, the navel as an artifact and bridge, and the gentle visceral technique Allison utilizes in her work with delicate touch vs deeper heavier manipulation.

I love how Allison invites us into important reframes around healing, techniques and modalities - this conversation is not just good for those having issues with their gut, but also anybody who is on a journey of healing.

Allison will be a guest teacher for my upcoming program Feed Your Wild GUT (which you’ll hear about in the Soul Gut Immunity Guide webinar - sign up below)! We’ll be focusing on breath and touch techniques for nourishing gut health as well as emotional + heart coherence.

  • How Allison sees herself as a healing artist and how she began focusing on touch

  • How the breath is an expression of who you are in every moment

  • Allison’s concept of “unwinding” and why Allison believes that going straight to harder gut therapies can be ineffective, and even detrimental, without first (or concurrently) clearing and bringing tonicity to the center with inner awareness and touch.

  • Why it’s critical that we meet our healing from a different paradigm and way of being that invites slowness

  • First steps of “Unwinding” that folks with gut issues can take (hint: it starts with slowing down)

  • Allison shares wonderful prompts to cultivate awareness of our gut and body to unveil root issues and interconnections within the dis-ease

  • How we are healing all the time through body regeneration, and way we can receive the healing deeper into our heart, mind, soul, and spirit

  • How Allison brings her teachings and practices into her personal life and areas of relationship, work, and more

  • Why it’s critical to cultivate the space and environment for healing and connecting to the messages of your body

  • How her book The Gut Wellness Guide is about how to tap the power of your intuition by nurturing the vitality of the physical belly, to use your guts in positive ways for health and happiness.

  • Significance of belly breathing, the navel as an artifact and bridge, and the gentle visceral technique Allison utilizes in her work with delicate touch vs deeper heavier manipulation

  • How we’re meant to self-regulate, but how co-regulation thru our navel influences our nervous system and the health of our gut

  • Why gentle and slow are two of Allison’s favorite words when it comes to healing work

  • The importance of slowing the breath and “feeling into the field” when starting touch work and therapy

  • Allison’s reframe of “deep” - Why deep is more about engaging in relationship and Being with presence and love versus going deep and hard with modalities

“The way to heal is to rest, digest, and repair. And repairing is not working hard. Repairing is slowing down and becoming quiet because it’s that part of the system.” ~ Allison Post

“Healing isn’t fixing. Healing is a process and it’s happening every moment. So how do we really come into the moment, and be with what’s there and get to know and invite what’s there? Because it’s being held there to communicate with you.” ~ Allison Post

“Unwinding is allowing what might have happened and frozen in time in a tissue or organ or in a way you work with your brain-body... it’s a way to slow it down so you can unravel, so that it can change.” ~ Allison Post

Ep. 145 Water Is Life :: The Ultimate Sacred Water Episode with Isabel Friend

This is an epic interview with Isabel Friend, International Water Advocate, public speaker, Reiki master, & teacher. Today we are talking all about Sacred Water. I was so excited when I came across Isabel's work, as Water has been showing up in my Akashic Record readings often, and one of the things that has very clear to me when I'm working with clients, particularly when I open up their Records around their health, is that there is an epidemic of dehydration... The topic of this episode is so critically important and relevant to every living being on this Earth that I really encourage you to sit in, even if you feel like you don't have an interest in water.

Quick disclaimer: Isabel is residing and calling in from beautiful Bali, and in Bali there is a plethora of roosters that love to sing so throughout the episode you're going to hear a lot of these beautiful rooster crows. Sometimes they can be quite loud so I encourage you to stick with it and stay for the entire interview because there is so much we cover!

We start off with looking at the best kinds of water to drink and filtration systems Isabel recommends, and the difference between wild living water and filtered water. Isabel shares her personal philosophy around water and why we need to begin to cultivate a different relationship and view of water as a whole well-rounded living being.

Isabel takes us on a magical journey of wild water... Do you know where your water comes from? Isabel is going to talk about that natural journey from the womb of Mother Earth rising to the surface and into your cells. We touch on the importance of drinking local wild water, how you can source wild water, the most important resource that Isabel wants you to know.

Beyond the health aspects of water and hydration, Isabel goes into the new biology of water looking at structured water, what that means, how do we get access to structured water, how do we create structured water, and why drinking unstructured bulk water is problematic for our health. We weave into the cosmic and esoteric aspects of water, and communion with water as a spiritual act that feeds our health on a very deep level. Isabel shares the origin stories that contain water from indigenous perspectives and the ways that humans have been communing with living water as a source of information, Divinity and tapping into the memory of the universe. So Yes - we talk about crystals, water scrying, hydromancy and working with water to tap into the answers of all of our greatest questions!

Of course, we also discuss the very real problems that we are seeing from our distorted relationship with the elements and with Mother Earth... Isabel talks about the political situation, privatization and accessibility issues around water, the water wars, and how we can step up as water guardians and embrace water activism in our daily lives.

I also share an Akashic Record reading on water that I channeled just before we hopped on the call for the interview -  it's so beautiful to see all of the parallels that have been woven in throughout our discussion.

*Special Discount for FYW Listeners!* Isabel is doing some amazing work and teachings around water, and she has many offerings including a special discount for listeners for a water e-course that I'm totally going to do and I want you to do it with me! Check out the links below to learn more about her e-course and how to access your special discount.

We'd love to hear your feedback and please share this episode out with your family and friends - one of the best things that we can do is share this information out so that more people awaken to the importance and critical matter that is Water and how we really need to show up for water with our full hearts and warriors spirits.

  • The more we connect with water spiritually, the more we have direct connection to the answers of ALL of our questions

  • The political situation around water - privatization and accessibility, water wars, the need for water activism & water guardianship

  • Why we need to start thinking in terms of watersheds - get to know the watershed in which you live!

  • The steps toward water justice and water democracy: recognizing water is a commons, the rights of water need to be in the hands of people in an egalitarian way, not in the hand of giant water cartels that are privatizing and redistributing water

    • Activism practices, getting involved with local watershed association, go to city hall for meetings, not supporting capitalistic structures by not buying water from across the globe, see if town or county already has sold public water services to a private company - be vocal when that contract is up for renewal for prevention

Every one of us who is a body of us should be intimately involved in protecting water.” ~ Isabel Friend

Either you get a filter or you become a filter.” ~ Isabel Friend

It’s about shifting our relationship to the source of life and recognizing that the water we drink is the blood of Mother Earth. The water we drink is not the blood of our municipal plumbing system... the water we drink is not the blood of corporate bottling plants... The water we drink is the blood of Mother Earth and we are stewards of that blood stream. There is no difference between the water inside of us and the water outside of us.” ~ Isabel Friend

We are water protecting herself. We are water stewarding life.” ~ Isabel Friend

It’s up to every light worker and every activist to really step into the guardianship of water. Right now according to WHO 80% of disease is from lack of access to clean water... Denying poor ppl access to water by privatizing water and turning it into a capitalist commodity is an act of terrorism against life itself, and yet that’s what’s happening across the globe.” ~ Isabel Friend

Akashic Records on Water (channeled by Venessa Rodriguez):

Water is the ancient storyteller, the wisdom keeper that holds the ancient knowledge, the secrets, the threads that have been tucked away

Water is a energetic portal thru its crystalline structure

It is the earth’s veins, the element that connects the fabric of all life

It is the shape shifter, the transporter, the vessel, the medicine,

The cosmic messenger

The essence of everything

The ether made embodied

Akasha of the earth

I am the womb

The light

The breath

The blood

The flow of life depends on me

Feel my rivers thru your cavernous body

Carrier of whispers

No force can stop me

The truth of the cosmos

The key to your dna

The blueprint for the “new world” as you call it

The map of the world as it was

The medium for Love.

Ep. 142 Earth speak :: Liberation through Intuitive Connection & Earth Magic with Natalie Ross

I am really excited to have one of my personal favorite podcasters, we have Natalie Ross on the show today. Natalie used to be the podcast hostess of the Dream Freedom Beauty podcast and now has a podcast called Earth Speak as well as a beautiful Collective along with that podcast. Today she is telling us all about it and what Earth Speak means to her. We did a sweet podcast exchange so I will also be on her Earth Speak podcast as a guest - I'll be sure to share that out when it becomes available.

In this conversation, we talked about how the seeds of Earth Speak and her journey with her own intuition were planted and how Natalie came into relationship with her intuition, plus how Natalie's winding path with synchronicities has led her to her work today. We talked about the Earth as a conscious being, why practicing presence and cultivating Connection are paramount, and Natalie has a message to those who have a challenging time living in this earth body, offering ideas of practices and therapies to tend to the parts of you that are hurting.

We talked about engaging with the elements and Natalie reveals one message that the plants have shared with her about our energy bodies. Natalie shares how the plants are guides in our process of Liberation and why now is THE time to connect + speak with the Earth, the plants, and all of the living beings for our Collective well-being. You'll hear about how Natalie experiences Earth speak herself, practices that she uses to attune herself and her top non-negotiables for tending to her energy body.

Natalie also gives us a sneak peek behind the scenes of Earth Speak Collective and her shared vision for supporting others to connect with their intuition and one another and the earth. I know you're going to love Natalie, she has such a wonderful spirit.

We are living in re-evolutionary times and one of the ways we can support ourselves through this process and support others is to tend to our connection to the Earth our own bodies + connect with our intuition. I firmly believe that as we move forward and look to create a more beautiful and just world, we must do so from a heart-centered place and one that is connected in with our intuition and in reverence of the earth, ourselves, and one another. For those of you who have been on the front lines... for those of you who have been protesting... for those of you who are essential workers, especially... remember to rest, tend to your resilience, fill up your cup and continue to do your sacred work.

Ep. 141 {ENCORE} Farming While Black: Restoring Sacred & Just Relationship with the Land & One Another with Leah Penniman

The soil stewards of generations past recognized that healthy soil is not only imperative for our food security—it is also foundational for our cultural and emotional well-being.” ~ Leah Penniman

This week we are rebroadcasting our episode with Leah Penniman on Farming While Black: Restoring Sacred Relationship with the Land and One Another, synchronistically originally aired exactly one year ago in June of 2019.

This episode is especially timely as we collectively face a collective uprising against racism, a global pandemic and unprecedented challenges as well as opportunities for change and healing. As we reflected back in 2019, Leah offers so much wisdom rooted in the power of Mother Earth and ways we can begin to dismantle racism through social justice work and connecting back to nature.

In this episode, you'll experience Leah's pioneering energy that supports our collective re-memberance of our sacred connection to land and the ways we can begin healing the injustices of the imposed systems as a community.

Leah's work with Soul Fire Farm is to increase farmland stewardship by people of color, promote equity in food access, and train the next generation of activist farmers.

Her book Farming While Black, is the first comprehensive manual for African-heritage people ready to reclaim their rightful place of dignified agency in the food system, with a concise “how-to” for all aspects of small-scale farming. But it’s not just Is a compendium of “how-tos” for small scale farming... it’s rich with historical context and weaving in the pragmatic with spirituality, soil ecology, planning, tools, plant medicine, healing trauma, and movement building. Leah breaks it all down for us in this episode!

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How Leah found a comrade in nature and cultivated a relationship that led to farming as a teenager

  • As a young person worked on many farms and realized that the sustainable agriculture world was super “white” and how she didn’t feel represented

  • How Leah found a mentor in Karen Washington Rise & Root Farm

  • How the story we’ve been told about farming is inaccurate and incomplete

  • Leah breaks down the external barriers and the history of exile, discrimination, violence and denigration of black people and forced disconnection from land

  • The importance of the return of black and brown people to the land and the need to fix land injustice

  • What are reparations and how can people give back and redistribute access and resources

  • How 98% of land is owned by white people and there is a 16:1 wealth gap between white folks and black folks at birth, the history of dispossession

  • Soul Fire Farm’s Action guide based on voices of black and indigenous people of color

  • How Leah weaves in spirituality with science in her book and in real life

  • How farming has allowed Leah to unfold into her whole self at Soul Fire, and Leah’s mission of supporting others to be able to experience the same

  • How Leah has navigated parenthood and raising her 2 children at Soul Fire Farm

  • Leah’s favorite resources in addition to her book (which also contains tons of resources!)

  • Learn the ways to support Leah Penniman’s work and Soul Fire Farm

Ep. 138 {SOLO} My Intimate Journey of Finding My Voice: 3 Lessons in Activating Your Inner Voice

In this solo episode, I share my personal journey of finding my voice - the good, the bad, and the not so cute. This continual work of connecting to and honoring my inner voice has led to incredible healing, expansion of intuitive abilities, and has allowed me to connect to my soul’s Truth and purpose. I share this with you because I believe NOW is the time that YOUR voice is expressed and heard... I believe we are collectively being called to connect with our inner voices & guidance, to stand tall in our Truth and express it clearly with integrity, alignment, compassion, & strength for the good of All.

In times of death, rebirth, transformation, it is imperative that those voices that have been suppressed & silenced ~ the voices of Mother Earth, Divine Feminine energy, Love & Compassion, Diversity & Sovereignty ~ are uplifted, expressed and heard.

YOU carry medicine, and you have the power to connect to the deepest wellsprings of wisdom, I believe it is our divine right and nature. That’s why I created my upcoming live virtual workshop Feed Your Wild VOICE... If you’re interested in joining us May 22nd, click the link below to read more.

Ep. 137 Getting Radical & Resilient with Plant Allies for this Pandemic with Renée Camila

Happy beloved Mother’s Day <3 Today we’re celebrating the 2nd anniversary of the Feed Your Wild podcast! FYW is 2.. I’m so in love with this toddler and I’m so grateful for YOU as a listener. Thanks for joining me on this wild ride ;)

Many of you have reached out asking for guidance on plants and herbs that would be most supportive in this time, and I wanted to bring someone on the show that worked with plants in a multidimensional way and focused on accessibility + community support. That’s why we’re speaking with Renée Camila of La Yerba Buena Herbs. I LOVED this conversation, we touched on so much, here are some highlights...

Renée shared ways we can work with our plant allies and herbal medicine to support ourselves during this pandemic - she touches in on the energetic and spiritual elements. We talk about finding ways to reorient ourselves to our medicine in a way that feels accessible and reciprocal. Renée shares some of her favorite plants for working with grief, visioning, change, and boundaries + protection and how to work with them including important considerations for foraging and wildcrafting.

We also talk about how to get radical with plants in the kitchen (including an amazing herbal resource for you), plus how Renée is supporting her own family with special recipes. She shares some well-needed advice for those experiencing panic in this time, why Renée believes working with your ancestors is so helpful and how radical self-care is a form of ancestral work. Renée also shares about her upcoming herbal apprenticeship and free herbal workshops.

Ep. 136 How to Navigate the Pandemic as An Empath/HSP with Lola Pickett

This episode is for all of you who FEEL deeply, identify as empaths and highly sensitive people! Our guest Lola Pickett works primarily with empaths/HSPs in reclaiming their resilience and power through their sensitivities. We dive into what is a highly sensitive person and empath, and the difference between the two. Lola shares the most common patterns that show up for empaths/HSPs that hold them back from stepping into their full power - so many have shown up in my own life. We talk about how this pandemic can be a portal for those folks to step into their powers of sensitivity and why we need to “upgrade the program” and tap into our resiliency during this time.

Lola shares her own personal journey with this pandemic and the tool that she used to help herself work through overwhelming anxiety - partnering with her brain. We touch on the medicine Lola sees we are receiving through this process, Lola’s thoughts on navigating fear and how we can move with fear in a way that best serves us, plus helpful questions to ask yourself. Of course we share some practical ways we can support ourselves as highly sensitive during this pandemic, and how we can continue to do so as we move into the unknown.

Quotes

The less boxes I put around, and labels I put on, things... the freer I am.” ~ Lola Pickett

When the *F* are we going to wake up and hear the medicine songs that are trying to sing us awake from inside our own bodies?” ~ Lola Pickett
