Ep. 138 {SOLO} My Intimate Journey of Finding My Voice: 3 Lessons in Activating Your Inner Voice

In this solo episode, I share my personal journey of finding my voice - the good, the bad, and the not so cute. This continual work of connecting to and honoring my inner voice has led to incredible healing, expansion of intuitive abilities, and has allowed me to connect to my soul’s Truth and purpose. I share this with you because I believe NOW is the time that YOUR voice is expressed and heard... I believe we are collectively being called to connect with our inner voices & guidance, to stand tall in our Truth and express it clearly with integrity, alignment, compassion, & strength for the good of All.

In times of death, rebirth, transformation, it is imperative that those voices that have been suppressed & silenced ~ the voices of Mother Earth, Divine Feminine energy, Love & Compassion, Diversity & Sovereignty ~ are uplifted, expressed and heard.

YOU carry medicine, and you have the power to connect to the deepest wellsprings of wisdom, I believe it is our divine right and nature. That’s why I created my upcoming live virtual workshop Feed Your Wild VOICE... If you’re interested in joining us May 22nd, click the link below to read more.

Ep. 136 How to Navigate the Pandemic as An Empath/HSP with Lola Pickett

This episode is for all of you who FEEL deeply, identify as empaths and highly sensitive people! Our guest Lola Pickett works primarily with empaths/HSPs in reclaiming their resilience and power through their sensitivities. We dive into what is a highly sensitive person and empath, and the difference between the two. Lola shares the most common patterns that show up for empaths/HSPs that hold them back from stepping into their full power - so many have shown up in my own life. We talk about how this pandemic can be a portal for those folks to step into their powers of sensitivity and why we need to “upgrade the program” and tap into our resiliency during this time.

Lola shares her own personal journey with this pandemic and the tool that she used to help herself work through overwhelming anxiety - partnering with her brain. We touch on the medicine Lola sees we are receiving through this process, Lola’s thoughts on navigating fear and how we can move with fear in a way that best serves us, plus helpful questions to ask yourself. Of course we share some practical ways we can support ourselves as highly sensitive during this pandemic, and how we can continue to do so as we move into the unknown.

Quotes

Ep. 133 Nurturing Radiant Health At Every Stage thru Everyday Plant Medicine with Dr. Leslie Korn

In light of the recent pandemic, it’s clear to me now more than ever that health sovereignty and empowerment requires radical connection to the natural world, plant medicine and ancestral wisdom ways, living in harmony with nature and Mother Earth. It also requires community support and collaboration. With threats of COVID-19 and of a mandatory vaccine and digital certificates, lack of access to life-saving treatments for so many, and reports that the pandemic seems to be hitting people of color & native populations the hardest - virus is disproportionately affecting Blacks, Latinx, and Native Americans (highlighting the systemic disparities already in place), we need to bring back medicine into the people’s hands as much as possible. Food and plants as medicine is obviously a primary part of this and a topic we’re passionate about on this podcast.

Today I’m releasing an interview I did with Dr. Leslie Korn, PhD. We recorded this interview a while back before the pandemic began (pre-Coronavirus), yet the topic discussion remains highly relevant: Nurturing Radiant Health At Every Stage with Everyday Plant Medicine...  What better week to release such an episode than this week in celebration of Earth day on April 22, which also happens to be a new moon in earthly Taurus. Of course we celebrate earth day every day on this podcast and Dr. Leslie’s new book, Natural Woman, can be an ally to put this into practice in our daily lives.

Dr. Leslie Korn served as a Fulbright scholar on traditional medicine, a Clinical Fellow at Harvard Medical School, and a National Institutes of Health–funded research scientist in mind/body medicine. In 1975, she founded the Center for Traditional Medicine, a public health clinic in rural indigenous Mexico that she directed for over twenty-five years. Author of nine books, she teaches and consults internationally for mental health professionals and tribal communities.

Her latest book Natural Woman is an incredibly comprehensive DIY herbal medicine book: Dr. Leslie draws from several herbal traditions (the medico-spiritual traditions of Curanderismo (Mexico), Ayurveda, Sufiism, and Northwest plant/fungi use by Native American communities) to address numerous health conditions—acute and chronic—and includes descriptions of how to use herbal preparations for spiritual and ritual use.

This book is designed to serve as an herbal companion for you to consult time and again for trusted guidance that can be shared with family, friends.

In these modern times when we’re losing this custom and tradition of passing of information from elders, it is an invaluable resource especially in the context of this pandemic which highlights the critical importance of health sovereignty, restoring our sacred natural connection with Mama Earth.

In this interview and Dr. Leslie’s book, we explore the sacred connection between herbs and womxn in ALL their beautiful forms.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Dr. Leslie Korn’s search for adventure, how she found herself in Mexico and being initiated into her healing path through illness, becoming her “own laboratory” and experiment of One

  • How the local women taught Dr. Leslie about regional and traditional medicine of Mexico

  • How Dr. Leslie created a local health center focused on traditional healing practices in Mexico

  • “Being on one’s own during which can be a serious acute illness taught me about not being afraid and not being fearful about dis-ease... and to use nature.” ~ Dr. Leslie

  • How Dr. Leslie began working as a traumatologist, merging energetic touch and psychotherapy

  • How touch is womxn’s intrinsic mode of communication

  • How Dr. Leslie works with people who do not feel comfortable being touched, and the power of animals for healing

  • How trauma disrupts our natural rhythms and how touch can provide a template for re-balancing

  • How licorice root is central to balancing our internal rhythms

  • Herbs have their own internal clocks regulated by light cycles and environment storing nourishment that furthers our own rhythms.

  • The different types of rhythms we have, including circadian and ultradian

  • The connection between breath, our brain and rhythms, and how we can naturally optimize our own rhythms for optimal health

  • Dr. Leslie shares about a variety of power plants such as chamomile, and jamaica as a wonderful source of antioxidants that regulates rhythms of our digestion

  • The importance of cross-cultural wisdom sharing and how this feeds into Dr. Leslie’s mission

  • Why rituals are so important for our health and livelihood

  • Rosemary’s protection powers and long historical connection with humans

  • The importance of connection and mentorship for learning - passing wisdom traditions through heart-based relationships

Ep. 131 German New Medicine :: Overcoming Fear of Illness + Harnessing the Power of Mind-Body Connection with Dr. Melissa Sell

Today we’re exploring the mind-body connection through the lens of German New Medicine (GNM). In this interview you’ll hear Dr. Melissa Sell explain what GNM is, the paradigm shifting work of Dr. Hamer, and how it’s changed her approach to health and healing.  Dr. Melissa breaks down the 5 Biological Laws that help you better understand yourself and the language that your body speaks. We talk about the psyche-brain-organ connection and various psychological “shocks” called Conflict Shocks that impact the expression of what is considered dis-ease in the body. Dr. Melissa shares how our body has wise biological programs that attempt to resolve conflicts and how this process is grossly misunderstood by conventional medicine.

We touch on the science of embryology and how specific tissue types are associated with specific psychological conflicts and biological manifestations.

Dr. Melissa shares some of her personal views on coronavirus, contagion and the proliferation of symptoms experienced en masse. We discuss the critical link between panic + fear and exacerbation of symptoms, the “nocebo effect,” and which biological programs might be linked with the symptoms of COVID-19. We also cover a couple of case studies through the lens of GNM: chronic sinus issues and chronic acne (something I’ve had a history with!).

This discussion contains a lot of technical elements as well as ideas that contradict those that are more widely accepted, so I invite you to listen in with an open mind and use your own perceptive ability to determine if this model makes sense to you.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What is German New Medicine and how Dr. Melissa discovered the paradigm-shifting work of Dr. Hamer and it completely changed her approach to health and healing

  • What German New Medicine and Louise Hay have in common

  • The 5 biological laws - Dr. Melissa breaks down each law and Significant Biological Special Programs (SBS) and how understanding the 5 Biological Laws will help you better understand yourself and the language that your body speaks

  • How GNM takes the unique subjective perspective of each individual and how that can apply to the development of dis-ease

  • The psyche-brain-organ connection and how you can see a psychological “shock” demonstrated on a brain scan!

  • How you can identify the type of conflict shock based on one’s symptoms

  • How a Meaningful Biological Special Program unfolds and how this knowledge can prove beneficial.

  • “Stink conflict” - how this is connected to sinus issues

  • How our body has wise biological programs that attempt to resolve conflicts and how this process is grossly misunderstood by conventional medicine

  • The different phases during a biological program, how the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems work together, and the natural rhythms of our healing process

  • The science of embryology and our knowledge of the evolution of human that link 3 basic tissue types and associates each with a specific SBS

  • The connection between tumors (excess cell proliferation) and the biological conflicts + programs at play

  • How bacteria play a vital role during the healing phase and GNM’s view that microbes don’t cause diseases and diseases are not contagious

  • The controversial view on COVID-19 thru the lens of GNM, based on a completely different paradigm of health understandings and away from the more conventionally accepted germ theory

  • Dr. Melissa shares some of her personal views on coronavirus, contagion and the proliferation of conflict symptoms experienced en masse and how she would approach

  • Morphic resonance, mirror neurons, and other unseen factors possibly at play

Ep. 129 The Medicine of Grief for Radical Change with Ayana Young

If you have been feeling a sense of overwhelm, fear, anxiety, loss, paralysis, and grief for some time... in light of ecological crisis, destruction of the natural world, and especially amidst Coronavirus pandemic, you are not alone. This grounding yet inspiring conversation is for you.

We are speaking with Ayana Young, host of the For The Wild podcast, an anthology of the Anthropocene; focused on land based protection, co-liberation and intersectional storytelling rooted in a paradigm shift from human supremacy towards deep ecology.

In this heart-felt interview, we talk about the transformative power of collective and personal grief as a portal, the importance of letting grief in collectively in this time, and the insights we are beginning to glean from COVID-19. Ayana reminds us of the critical importance of community resiliency, local systems, and connection to Place that is rooted in love.

Ayana shares how she faces grief, guilt, and shame in her own life, including supportive touchstones and practices, and how her work and conversations with great minds on her podcast have shaped and informed her own evolution.

Ayana also shares about her land restoration projects, including the "1 Million Redwoods" project, where she is working to preserve and propagate the biodiversity of the old growth Redwood forest.

Ayana’s deeply rooted commitment to wild nature is apparent in the way she navigates this discussion with a grounded sense of curiosity, connectedness and aliveness that has seeded in me a sense of hope.

Hear Ayana’s invitation to listeners during the challenging times of Coronavirus and beyond, and her prayer for the collective.

QUOTES

We’ve been living on this earth as humans much longer than we’ve been living as industrialized humans.” ~ Ayana Young

We have to fall in love, and we have to be committed and devoted, so when we see those things being lost, the grief gets awakened (and maybe guilt and shame). We can move that into passion, action, devotion, commitment, focus... if we can do that with stillness, slowness, and real intention, that would be such a good recipe for how to be with what is happening right now.” ~ Ayana Young

Ep. 128 Medical Astrology 101 :: Mapping Individual & Collective Health Trends + Coronavirus Insights with Judith Hill

This mega episode with Judith Hill, internationally recognized astrologer, author, & researcher, is jam packed with insights on Medical Astrology. Judith’s unique perspective is grounded and dynamic, and this conversation was incredibly timely falling at the beginning of the Coronavirus events. Judith shares her astrological take on Coronavirus, COVID-19’s connection to the lungs and the collective health trends in 2020.

We cover what medical astrology is, the many uses of medical astrology, its history in the medical world, and how to actually apply medical astrology in everyday life.

We cover the primary and fundamental elements we need to know to get started with medical astrology, how Saturn and Mars influence various biological processes, why they are considered “malefic” and can be misunderstood. Judith shares how the moon influences our health, as well as which body parts and areas are connected to specific signs and planets.

We explore various aspects of my own chart and how they’re connected to issues I’m currently experiencing, plus Judith shares case studies and examples of how she has used medical astrology with clients (she even touches on Bernie Sanders’ astrological predispositions!)

Judith also speaks about astrology for fertility and gives a great talk on cosmic influences of fertility for those who are interested.

The way Judith brings astrology into life in a practical and grounded way is super helpful in these times of uncertainty and navigating the unknown - we literally have a map and signals we can look to for gaining a sense of what might be going on which can be calming for our nervous systems!

  • Judith’s take on Coronavirus and the collective health trends according to astrology, the main trigger dates to pay attention to: between March 15th - 19th, and again on the New Moon on March 24th, and again the Full Moon in April 7th - 14th as the points we need to get through, her prediction that airports will be closing!

  • The power of our thoughts to impact the collective field

  • Judith’s top recommendations on how to navigate this living world

  • Why Judith will gladly discuss the science behind astrology with skeptics and challengers, and the various kinds of studies that have demonstrated the validity of astrology

Ep. 124 Heal Yourself from the Pain of Childhood Trauma with Liz Mullinar of Heal For Life

Today I’m sitting with Liz Mullinar, a survivor of childhood trauma, trauma counsellor, and the founder of Heal For Life Foundation which has provided trauma recovery programs for over 20 years. She developed the Heal For Life Model in the early nineties when she felt along with other survivors of trauma that there had to be a permanent way of healing from the impact of childhood memories.

Liz latest book is a step-by-step guide called HEAL FOR LIFE: How to Heal Yourself from the Pain of Childhood Trauma based on the Heal For Life model that has helped over 8,500 people self-heal from trauma. It demonstrates how to transform painful trauma memories and emotional triggers into permanent healing. 100% of the book’s proceeds go back to Heal for Life to pay for survivors to attend programs!

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Liz’ perspective on trauma, what it is, and its impact on the brain

  • Impact of trauma on brain and nervous system

  • Why trauma is so debilitating for years afterward

  • Triggers - Liz’ unique perspective on how “triggers are treasures” and ow to de-trigger - Liz walks us through this important process

  • How to get into your right brain to support yourself in trauma work

  • Why Liz recommends we lean into our fears rather than avoid feeling the fear

  • Why loving oneself is the first step in the healing journey

  • Importance of safety for healing and impact of shame, how do we acquire shame and how do we heal from it?

  • How to overcome trauma memories permanently - Liz gives us examples from her own life

  • Changing thought patterns and literally change our brain so we can shift negative patterns, unpacking the not-Self and rediscover who we really are

  • More inspiring info on the brain for healing

  • Why Liz believes everyone can heal and steps to start healing your trauma

  • The connection between chronic health challenges and trauma, such as migraine, chronic fatigue syndrome, and more plus Liz’ own experience with “unexplained” health challenges

Ep. 123 MARCH :: Akashic Soul Nourishment Reading :: Enter the Void Within

About Monthly Soul Nourishment Readings: These readings are usually filled with metaphor & symbols, so may require a bit of unraveling & might mean something different for each person, so pay attention to what comes up for you as you listen on. Hope they provide value and moments of reflection in your journey.

Ep. 122 Functional Somatic Syndrome, Women’s Health, & Community Herbalism with Anja Robinson

Today we are speaking with Anja Robinson, Clinical Herbalist, Functional Nutritionist, Women’s Integrative Health Educator and founder of Poppy Herbals—an Herbal Elixir Bar and Apothecary in Ashland, OR. She’s also my co-facilitator for our upcoming Herbal Anatomy Series at Hawthorn Institute! In this episode, we’re talking about functional somatic syndrome (FSS) and the power of community health & herbalism in addressing complex health issues.

FSS has been around for thousands of years and various terminology has been used to describe it, including hysteria, somatoform disorders, and medically unexplained symptoms. FSS highlights the inefficacy of the conventional medical system in addressing root causes, the undeniable mind-body connection, the startling rates of trauma (esp in women) impacting health, and the lack of community wellness and support.

Together, Anja and I explore top ways to support those who have experienced FSS (many of us), the importance of community, and how to begin addressing the underlying issues related to so many unexplained or complex symptoms and health challenges.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How Anja started down her path into herbalism, Ayurveda, nutrition and women’s health

  • The normalization of dis-ease and imbalance in our medical system

  • How active listening is an indispensable tool as a practitioner and part of the medicine

  • The most common underlying factors of complex chronic health challenges

  • What is functional somatic syndrome/somatic symptom disorder and how it relates to the prevalence of chronic health challenges, especially for women

  • What common disorders and health challenges fall under the umbrella of somatic syndrome, including PMS, chronic fatigue, chronic pain

  • Why Anja appreciates functional medicine and what some of the differences are between functional approach and conventional approach

  • Why addressing the gut and blood sugar regulation are the first places to address when dealing with a complex health challenge or somatic syndrome

  • How Anja uses elimination diets as a first line approach to reduce inflammation, support immune system, and identify triggers - Anja lists common foods to avoid

  • Community herbalism and ways women can come together to support their health

  • How women have increased exposure to toxins in daily life that have an impact on our detoxification system and overall health

  • The 3 pillars of health for women: diet + lifestyle; mind-body medicine; community

  • Anja offers a few ways of how to build community and make community medicine
