This Episode's Theme...

#UNFILTERED Moon Musings :: New Moon In Scorpio :: Slow and Deep is the Medicine

It’s Scorpio season and we’re taking it slow this new moon and week of Halloween & Samhain. Today Venessa and Megan talk about how this Scorpio moon is calling us to deepen our intentions and dares us to find a place in our life experience where we can take it slow.

We share some of what we’ve been struggling with on a personal level, and the surprising remedies this moon has offered us. We discuss Scorpio’s influence on our 2nd chakra & reproductive organs, and how the medicine of Slowness facilitates deep healing & transformation in these areas (and assists other remedies such as our “hormone balancing” herbal allies and foods to work even better, or at all).

From Slow Food to Slow Making, this moon and season we are inviting you to literally carve out moments of stillness and savor the medicine.

Ep. 97 How Working With Your Well Ancestors Can Support Healing & Change Your Life with Maris Bergrune

Ancestral lineage healing is a potent process of healing and vitalization for your ancestral lineages, and by extension yourself.” ~ Maris Bergrune

Maris Bergrune is an ancestral lineage healing practitioner, Norse ritual animist, and ritual healer. She helps people become deeply well with their ancestors and access Northern European wisdom traditions and transformational ritual.

Today, Maris and I are talking about ancestral lineage healing, what it is, how Maris got into this work, and why it’s critical to develop a connection to our “well ancestors” for reparation work within our line so we can know what it means to be resourced by our wise and well ancestors.

Maris shares how to get in touch with your helpful ancestors and build healthy connection with them to clarify your unique gifts and give you a sense of belonging in the world. We cover the difference between ancestral lineage work and soul history work, the importance of boundaries and protection in this work and how to breakthrough intuitive blocks when connecting to the Ancestors.

Ep. 91 Liminal Dreaming :: Surfing the Edges of Consciousness with Jennifer Dumpert

If our reality - and hence our life experiences - are shaped by our perception and limitations of our imagination, then what can our dreams teach us about consciousness and our Selves?

In this episode, we’re talking with Jennifer Dumpert, a San Francisco-based writer, lecturer, and consciousness hacker to help us answer this question. She’s the author of the recently released Liminal Dreaming: Exploring Consciousness at the Edges of Sleep. Jennifer teaches the practice of Liminal Dreaming—surfing the edges of consciousness using hypnagogic and hypnopompic dream states.

We discuss liminal dreaming as the doorway between waking and dream consciousness, how it differs from other kinds of dream & sleep states, and the healing benefits of liminal dreaming and yoga nidra being applied globally. We also talk about one of my favorite topics - imagination as a faculty of perception (and perhaps the most important one!) and what’s actually happening in the brain and body when we experience common collective experiences such as sleep paralysis, falling sensations and jerking, and “hallucinations.”

Jennifer also dives into oneirogens - what they are, how they work and how to use them, including herbs, sounds, smells, and technology we can use for enhancing dreams, divination, & healing. Jennifer is the founder of the Oneironauticum, an international organization that explores the phenomenological experience of dreams as a means of experimenting with mind.

This was such a fun and fascinating interview, and I loved how Jennifer wove tons of practical tools and exercises into her book... That’s why I’m excited to announce that we’re doing an Instagram giveaway of Jennifer’s book Liminal Dreaming!

3 lucky winners will receive a free copy of her book - read below to find out how to enter (before it ends this week)!

Ep. 90 The Art of Personal Mythmaking For Healing & Transformation with Janelle Hardy

Have you ever thought about working with your personal story and considering your story as a mythology? Janelle believes that we can heal and transform when we work with our personal mythologies instead of against them. Janelle supports creative, courageous, sensitive women + non-binary people in reclaiming their brilliance, vibrancy and strength via a transformation memoir-writing process called The Art of Personal Mythmaking.

A huge belief of mine is that we have the power to change our stories and that’s directly connected to our health and life experiences in our bodies. The work that Janelle does is navigating people through this personal memoir writing process that leads one through personal transformation.

Janelle also has her own podcast, The Personal Mythmaking Podcast, today she published my episode where we dive into a fairytale that I have loved since a little girl - The Little Mermaid!

Janelle shares her personal story and how she came to develop the Art of Personal Mythmaking process. Janelle discusses what she calls “the great forgetting” - the erasure of where one comes from and shares her exploration of family history of trauma, and discovering the multigenerational healing process through personal mythmaking. We also talk about the benefits of feeling stuck and powerful ways to move through flavors of resistance in all the ways it shows up.

Ep. 88 Woke Womb Work: Healing Generational Trauma & Reclaiming Yoni Power with The Brujas of Brooklyn

We’re speaking with Dr. Griselda Rodriguez-Solomon and Dr. Miguelina Rodriguez, aka The Brujas of Brooklyn. As Afro-Dominican identical twins, raised in Brooklyn, New York, they believe in the power of Spirit to cast spells that aid in collective healing. The Brujas of Brooklyn are healing generational traumas of gendered racism, which women of color often hold in our wombs, or Yonis. Their craft is therefore dedicated to womb-healing, or what they call Woke Womb Work.

In this conversation, we talk about what bruja means to them and the reclamation of this word and way of being.  They share how they came into “Woke Womb Work” diving deep into the sacred realms of the Yoni and how it relates to socioeconomic and political events and forces.

The Brujas breakdown for us the disparities within reproductive justice, how intergenerational and transgenerational trauma impacts our genes and health today and how conscious work of healing unravels this injustice.

From bleeding, moon cycles, to Kundalini yoga to twerkshops, we're talking about the elements that go into their work and the practical magic that we can implement into our daily lives to empower us.

The Brujas share what they have gained from this work on a personal level, including the healings and gifts that have unfolded over the years through motherhood, dating and in their work in the classroom as professors.

Dr. Griselda Rodriguez-Solomon (Dr. G.) is a professor, doula and Kundalini yogi. She earned a PhD in Sociology with an emphasis on Gender Studies from Syracuse University. Dr. G. teaches courses throughout the City University of New York (CUNY) related to Racism and Birthing (In) Justice in the US. She is a published author and contributor for Hip Latina Magazine. The home-birth of her sun Talib changed her life forever.

Dr. Miguelina Rodriguez is an unapologetic gentrification critic, author and Urban Studies professor at LaGuardia Community College. She holds a PhD in Urban Planning and Public Policy from Rutgers University. Her dissertation was an ethnographic study on the ways in which first and second-generation Dominican immigrants experience/make sense of gentrification in Washington Heights. Dr. Miguelina Rodriguez thanks her Saturn's Return for shaping her life as a Yoni priestess. Womb Wellness is her life's work.

Ep. 84 The Magical Mundane, Plant Allies As Guides, & Personal Sovereignty with The Botanical Bruja Lola Venado

Don’t overlook the simple act of introducing yourself and asking for blessings... the spirits and ancestors are always ready to hear us.. We just have to speak.” ~ Lola Venado

We’re speaking with Lola Venado, The Botanical Bruja™, a folk herbalist, energy worker, kitchen witch, writer, speaker, and community gatherer. Lola’s work and creation as The Botanical Bruja™ and her business Xantico House inspire us to live more fully in the present moment, remember our own medicine, and to take respite in the little things.. Remember that these connections to the mundane are just as magical and special as the grander things in life.

In this conversation, Lola shares what led her to the creation of The Botanical Bruja™ and Xantico House, and why reclaiming this term bruja (“witch”) is an important part of honoring her lineage and medicine path.

She shares how a health crisis 5 years ago snapped her back into her plant path & magic roots, how Lola navigated a large Mexican family dynamic as a highly sensitive person, and the remarkable journey she is taking, stepping deep into trust and relationship with a plant ally and new land... and it all started from a dream she had one night.

Lola offers recommendations for people making big moves and feeling ungrounded in doing so, and how to establish connection with the land and cultivate a relationship with Magic in the mundane. Lola naturally demonstrates the power of plática - or creating space for discussion and connection around our daily lives so that we can share our stories... because when we can share and listen to stories, not only can healing occur, but it provides inspiration to pursue one’s own medicine path and sacred journey in life.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How time in the kitchen was a time of love connection and peace growing up, and how it was a sanctuary within her tumultuous relationship between Lola and her mother

  • How Lola’s mom’s DIY preference for potions, products, and remedios over store-bought items had an impact on Lola’s creation of The Botanical Bruja and Xantico House

  • Why Lola hates making the distinction between food and medicine

  • How plants have always been in Lola’s life, why bruja is still not an acceptable term in her abuela’s eyes, and how she is honoring and reclaiming her mother’s legacy and lineage of this path and bloodline

  • How chemical sensitivities and a health crisis led Lola to her plant medicine path, magical roots, and business

  • How Lola navigated a large Mexican family dynamic as a highly sensitive person

  • How the puzzle pieces begin to fall into place as you start to walk your path

  • Lola’s take on the Energy of The Fool in the tarot - starting at zero, naive but open to possibility

  • How this energy brought Lola to her most recent big move - which started with a dream and a connection to a plant

  • Something that is really important to Lola in her work is preaching personal sovereignty, reconnecting us back to our innate wisdom

  • Lola’s view on relationships, and how she sees beauty within all her relationships, even the shitty ones

  • Takes us on a journey of her dream with ocotillo in the closet and the messages she followed

  • Lola’s surprising discoveries about ocotillo and the connections to her main ancestral lands/ origin of her own maternal lineage in the desserts of Mexico as well as southern Arizona

  • How the yaqui/yoeme tribe is the ancestral line of her ancestral maternal lineage located in Tucson where she now lives

  • How following her curiosity and connection to plants has been answering the call

  • Lola offers recommendations for people making big moves and feeling ungrounded

  • Establishing connection with the land, creating ritual around introducing oneself to land, asking for blessings, getting intimate with the land and soil

  • How to cultivate a relationship with Magic in the mundane based on reverence and connection

  • The power of a plática and how you can expect a plática along with your remedy when working with Lola

Ep. 81 Indigenous Right Relationship Building & Unspoken Truths Living Through Us with Pulxaneeks

Pulxaneeks.jpg

Having just observed 4th of July, aka Independence Day in the US, this interview with Pulxaneeks (Pul-ha-neeks), founder of Heart to Heart Indigenous Relations Consultation is both timely and meaningful. Pulxaneeks’ work supporting us in remembering these kinds of connections, that we belong to Mother Earth, and what it means to be in right relationship with Mother Earth as well as with Indigenous people, is critical and important to highlight as it relates to all of these seemingly unrelated areas such as health.

In this interview, we explore her work in Indigenous Allyship Training, whole-hearted understanding of what it means to be in right relationship with Indigenous peoples & what right use of privilege is & how to cultivate it. We talk about the power of asking heart-based questions and how many of us are waking up to the displaced and unprocessed grief that many of us carry from our own lineages.

Pulxaneeks reminds us that we’ve each been colonized at some point in our lineage, and the long term impact of this on our life experience and relationships. She shares how this affects being in Right Relationship with Indigenous People  and what’s at the heart of cultural appropriation. This conversation extends far beyond this hour-long dialogue, starting with a deep intake process that allowed me to reflect on these issues within my own life experience, and continues to provoke questions and awareness long after. I hope it inspires helpful reflections for you!

Pulxaneeks (Pul-ha-neeks) is from the Eagle Clan of the Haysla First Nation located on the northwest coast of the place now called Canada.

Her path of being a group facilitator, program designer & event producer was sparked 19 years ago & has been applied in a wide diversity of ways throughout her life.

Her background includes cultural based youth outreach with First Nations youth who are considered ‘high risk’, Elder Care & Child Care.

Her passion for contributing to the future generations has made her a community oriented entrepreneur & visionary of next paradigm change. This has resulted in her most recent development called “Heart to Heart - Indigenous Relations Consultation”, which is based entirely on the unique understanding that has come from being exposed to both Indigenous & Settler decent cultures.

Pulxaneeks is a living, loving result of the coastal Indigenous village that raised her & all that survived in the lineage she was born to. She honours the Elders, Mentors and huge family whose love she is a living result of and the Ancestors whose strength and resilience is flowing through her veins.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How Pulxaneeks’ work is rooted in her roots

  • The enlightening intake process Pulxaneeks asks all those with whom she’ll work with, and the power of asking questions

  • How grief showed up for me as I engaged Pulxaneeks’ questions related to my own ancestors

  • How many of us are waking up to the displaced and unprocessed grief that many of us carry from our own lineages

  • What does it mean to be “in right relationship” with indigenous peoples and the land

  • Starting out with ancestry and intergenerational trauma and how not all cultures have a place to bring the grief and trauma, allowing it to impact everything

  • Considering how we have ALL been colonized in some way within our own lineages, and looking at the trauma that our own ancestors have carried over generations

  • Pulxaneeks’ belief that things will come up when it’s time and ready, and the importance of having silence

  • Her advice to those that are not connected to their lineage or where/whom they come from

  • How the trauma that you are experiencing in your current life is related to your lineage’s trauma

  • How to recognize privelege, what is right use of privlege and alleviating the shame of having it

  • Whole-hearted understanding of what it means to be in right relationship with Indigenous peoples

  • What’s at the heart of cultural appropriation

  • Call out culture and the need for community

  • The importance of being willing to be called out and do the work

  • Why having a basic understanding of trauma and conscious communication is critical when engaging in ancestry work and Indigenous relationship building

  • Pulxaneeks’ personal story and the helpful practices and therapies that helped her with her own trauma

  • Her advice to devote a time at least twice a month to become “timeless together” and to hear one another deeply and fully
